Just inland from Hora is the village of Metaxada. Across the beautiful green valley is the Monastery of St. George which amazingly survived terrible fires that passed through these hills in 2007. The church is from the 13th century and is open only on feast days, but it is worth sitting in a kafenion in Metaxada and enjoying the view over the valley. The Church of the Transfiguration, Mesochori Going towards Methoni from Pylos, the first left turn takes you to the village Mesochori. The village church is from the Byzantine period and still has some original paintings to see inside. If it is locked, someone in the village may be able to help with the key just ask around! Church of the Apostles and the Square March 23, Kalamata Both mark the centre of the Old Town. The church is in fact an amalgam of two churches, the first dates from the 2nd century and has part of a fourth century frescoe intact. The Pantocrator in the dome is in good condition, while just below the Ascension of Christ is visible. The larger domed basilica iwas added during the second Venetian period (1685-1815). Kolokotronis, the leader of the […]
This church appears to have been built at the same time as the castle. This church was originally a mosque, as evidenced by an examination of some architectural features. It is open at the same times as the castle.
The most important church to see in the region north of Pylos is the Byzantine cathedral of Aghia Sotira (The Church of the Transfiguration). Located about 12km east of Filatra in the village of Christiani its design is said to be based on Agia Sophia in Constantinopouli. During the 11th century, the village of Christiani was the Byzantine city of Christianoupolis and the seat of the Archbishop. From the 14th century it lost its importance in the Byzantine world and in 1837 the bishopric was relocated to Kyparissia. The impressively large Byzantine church was restored after an earthquake in 1886, and is surrounded by the remains of a series of related building.
The church of Ypapanti (The presentation of Christ) is the Cathedral of the Messinian capital, a magnificent Byzantine-style church, built in 1839 and inaugurated in 1879. The Holy icon of the Virgin Mary (Ypapanti) is located here and is celebrated every February 2nd. As the Virgin is the patron saint of Kalamata this is a major celebration and local holiday. The icon is said to date from 672 AD and was found in stables during Ottoman rule after one of the citys noblemen saw it in a vision. Having survived a fire, the back of the icon has been burned but the front is intact. After its discovery the icon found its home in a small church with the name Ypapanti built where it had been found. The church was named in honour of the icon and also an ancient temple that had stood on the same site. After the liberation of Greece the small church was demolished and the new church of Ypapanti was inaugurated on August 19th, 1873, and since then has been the Metropolitan Church of Kalamata. The holy icon has the respect not only of the residents of Kalamata but of Greeks everywhere due to the […]
To the central west of Mount Taygetos, near the village of Giannitsa (contemporary Eleohori), stands the beautiful monastery of Dimiova, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The contemporary monastery was built in the first decades of the 17th century and its name has been referred to as Dimiova, Timiova, Tinova, Dimonovo and Dimanovo. The official name is Dimiova, a name of Slavic origins interpreted in Greek as Crocotopi (a place where wild crocus exists in abundance; the plant is the main ingredient of a yellow pigment called “zaphora). Crocuses are still abundant in the area during spring, especially in the woods of the monastery. The church (Catholicon) of the monastery is a cruciform, domed church almost square, without a nave. The frescos are of special interest, dating from 1663, and the Templon (the wall separating the alter from the main body of the church), from 1773. The monasterys most valuable treasure is the icon of the Panagia Dimiovitissa, painted in the style of Panagia Glykofilousa and titled the Hope of Christians, to which many miracles are attributed. It was considered to be a work of the period of the Iconoclast controversy, namely the 8th and 9th centuries, but […]
At the meeting point of Mounts Ithomi and Eva (Aghiou Vasiliou), and between the villages of Ancient Messini (Mavromati) and Valyra, stands, majestic and dominating, the historical monastery of Voulkanos, founded in the 17th century. The name “Voulkanos, and the earlier versions Vourkano, Dorkano and Voulkani, are probably attributed to a Byzantine lord or land owner, to whom the area around Mount Ithomi belonged. Tradition has it that the Monastery of Korifi was built in the early 8th century, around 725 A.D., by iconolatry (icon worshiping) monks, at the location where the sacred icon of Panagia was found hanging on a bush, next to a lit lamp. According to a different tradition the builder was Emperor Andronikos II Paleologos (1282-1328) however, neither of the two traditions has been historically documented. The church of the old monastery was a domed basilica with three naves; it survives today with two naves, after many modifications. It is built upon the site of the ancient temple of Ithomata Zeus, and a lot of the original masonry has been used in its construction. The temple’s interesting frescos were painted by the brothers Dimitrios and Georgios Moschou from Nafplio, in 1608. At the intersection of the […]
Gialova Wetlands: Paradise where angels take the form of Flamingos. The wetlands of Gialova (Divari) are of particular ecological interest as a major stopover point for many migratory birds. Many rare species of birds such as herons and flamingos, ospreys, stilts, avocets, calidris, snipe, curlew, tartaric, terns, and the only chameleon found in Europe. The African chameleon changes colour depending on his mood and are an endangered species so please drive carefully and only park in designated areas. The wetlands are a protected area as among the many species found here there are several endangered birds as well the chameleons and the carretta carretta turtle. The only bird with the strange charm of silhouettes, with their feet tall, the long and weird beaks, their slender necks and evligystous. Excites the slow dance moves and drag the pace. Between the wetland and the sea behind thick thyme bushes is hidden another surprise; Voidokilia beach, a perfectly round beach surrounded by rolling sand dunes.
Messinia has an inexhaustible natural wealth nature lovers can enjoy at any time of year. The indigenous evergreen forest The indigenous evergreen forest of arbutus on the island of Sapientza, which has been designated a protected monument of nature, is unique in the Mediterranean, with trees whose height reach and exceed 10 – 12m with an estimated age of 10,000 years. On the island of Sapientza visitors have the opportunity to see a unique spectacle, the valley of pollen called Spartolakka. This is an unusual layer of orange-colour fossilized pollen that has formed a strange layer of stone. Polylimnio: a wonderful array of small lakes In the deep gullies of the ravine of the Mavri Limni (Black Lake) lies something very special. Polylimnio is a succession of tiered lakes. In a secluded setting lay 15 lakes, each a complete world in its own right, with its aquatic flora and fauna. With unusual names such as Black Lake, Little Heart, Italian, Kadi, Panagos, Stathoula and all of them are exquisitely beautiful. Along with gorges and waterfalls they create a unique green ensemble surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. The lakes are joined by successive waterfalls and lush shade. The most beautiful […]
Mount Taygetus is the highest and most impressive mountain not only of Messinia but of all the Peloponnese. Stately and iconic, Mount Taygetos dominates the skyline of Kalamata, and the entire Messinian Mani. The mountain, whose paths hold many legends and stories, got its name from a daughter of Atlas, the nymph Taygete. Fruit of the union of Taygete with Zeus was Lakedemonas, one of many local heroes, who honoured his mother by naming the mountain after her. Alexandreas Isychios stated that the name of the mountain derives from ‘ Tays ‘, which means ‘ great ‘ or ‘ long ‘. Mount Taygetus separated two towns; to the east Sparta and to the west Fares, current day Kalamata. The mountain, the highest in the Peloponnese, is a haven for many species of both the plant and animal kingdom. The highest peak is Prophet Ilia at an altitude of 2.407m. With a total length of 115km and a maximum width of 30km it is composed of three major mountain ranges: the North and Central Taigetos and Mount Tainaro (or Sangia). A mainly limestone rocky place of canyons, ravines, gorges and caves such as Diros and Lycurgus in Doloi. Amazing stone paths […]
Undoubtedly Messinia must be one of the few places in Greece that has such a wide variety and choice of beautiful beaches for enjoyable swimming. From the endless beaches of Finikounda and the smaller but equally attractive beach of Methoni, all the way round the coast to the pristine clean beaches of the Mani, the truth is that swimming here is a real treat. The north is a good place to start as the sandy beach north of Kiparissia and Kalo Nero is probably the longest stretch of golden sand in the whole Peloponnese. For this reason, even in the height of summer it doesnt take too much effort to find yourself isolated. This beach is a favourite nesting-ground of the loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta, so keep an eye open not to disturb their nests. The beach at Kalo Nero itself is a mix of sandy shale and pebbles. Heading south, Stomio beach is the small, horseshoe shaped beach of Filiatra, where you may well make a stop to look at its renowned eccentricities: a 12m high replica of the Eiffel Tower, a scaled down model of the Unisphere copied from the 1964 New York World Fair and an enormous […]
Ηouses impress and encapsulate the special architectural nature of the Mani and capture moments from the turbulent life of the wealthy and important local families. Finally, the local features such as stone cobbled streets, several kilometres long, which directly linked the area in the past with the wider economy of the region and were the only “bridge” to the rest of the county. One of the most beautiful cobbled streets is the famous Biliovou just after the village of Sotirianika, and is probably the most well-maintained paved path in the area, with a total of 75 bends.
Ιs in turn an example of the traditional architecture of the Mani. With an approximately square plan, the large building is constructed of local stone has three to four different levels. The defensive nature of the main tower and the windows offer valuable information about the turbulent history of the area and its long battles.
Is distinguished by its four levels and the features of a cistern, battlements and the defence infrastructure of a fortress. It sits in harmony with the outer dwellings, the traditional oil mill surrounded by defence walls, giving visitors the chance to see up close a small but very significant example of a Mani castle.
Which is linked to Theodoros Kolokotronis because he took refuge here during the persecution of the Klephts, is located near Kastania in Messinan Mani. This is a multi-storey war tower of the 18th century, reflecting the traditional architecture of the area, illustrated with defensive gun slits. It was home of the legendary Captain Dourakis of Kastania and boasts four circular towers.
Ιn Exohori is a typical fortified house (tower) of the 18th century. It has three floors and a rectangular plan with several gun slits on each of the four sides. The arch-shaped windows, the walls and the arched door complete the historically imposing building.
In the village of Kampos, built (after 1830) for the most part of stone, is mainly defensive in nature. It has two floors and a semicircular protrusion and its reputation is due mainly to the fact that Alexander Koumoundourou was for many years Prime Minister of Greece during the post revolution era.
Located in Sotirianika is a complex of towers, which mainly served as the watch towers of the area. This is a square war tower that has three floors and is surrounded by circular turrets which complement the impressive form. This particular tower is part of a wider set from the pre-revolutionary era and the site hosts houses, outbuildings and a chapel.
Was one of the major commercial and shipping centres in medieval times of the Mediterranean. Its castle is irrefutable evidence of the towns wealth and power, built in the 7th century on a rocky promontory which was used as a defensive fortress of the Byzantines (395 AD – 1204 AD). In the northern part of the fortified citadel many important buildings have been found, including ruins of houses, two Turkish baths, the Byzantine church of Agia Sophia, the Church of Transfiguration, several cisterns and also the buried remains of British prisoners of war from World War II. Pylos hosts two castles, and Neokastro and the Paleokastro. Paleokastro or Palionavarino, was built by the Franks in 1278, it has a rectangular shape with many square and round towers. Near the castle is Nestor’s cave which is mentioned by Pausanias, according to tradition this is where Hermes hid the cows which were stolen from Apollo and also, again according to legend, the cave that Nileas and his son Nestor used as a stable . Neokastro built in 1573 by the Ottomans is at the entrance of the natural bay of Navarino and consists of a upper and lower castle. The hexagonal shaped […]
(6th or 7th century AD) is one of the finest specimens of Venetian fortress architecture, and is one of the few castles where people still have their homes and churches. Noteworthy are the churches of Agia Sophia and St. Charalambous – an old Catholic church which the Turks turned into a mosque and is now an Orthodox church.

On the bare rocky slopes of Mount Kotilio stands one of the most important and imposing temples of antiquity, dedicated to Apollo Epikourios (“Apollo the Helper”).. The temple is situated in a prominent position and is on the U.N.E.S.C.O. list of World Cultural Heritage sites along with the Egyptian Pyramids, the Parthenon and other monuments worldwide. The temple was dedicated to Apollo Epikourios by the inhabitants of Figalia because they overcame a plague epidemic. The inhabitants of Figalia had erected a temple in honour of Apollo Vassita in the 7th century B.C., and worshipped him with the name Epicure supporter in war or illness. He was given the name Epicurean during the wars against the Spartans around 650 B.C. The final Temple was built during the second half of the 5th century BC (420-410) by Iktino who was also the architect of the Parthenon and for this reason is sometimes referred to as the Parthenons Twin. The construction managed to combine many iconographic characteristics that showed the conservative religious tradition of the Acadians embracing the new features of the classical era. Characterised by a multitude of both original outer and internal fittings which make it a unique monument in […]
